Design software leans on two things: memory, for large files and many layers, and the graphics chip, for 3D, CAD, effects and video timelines. Office laptops share memory with a built-in graphics chip; workstations add a dedicated graphics card with its own memory.

What matters

Dedicated graphics for 3D, CAD and video. Programs like AutoCAD, SketchUp, Blender and video editors run far better with a dedicated card. Photo editing and 2D design are fine on built-in graphics if you have enough RAM.

16GB of RAM or more. Large Photoshop files, video timelines and 3D scenes fill memory quickly. 32GB is comfortable for heavy video and 3D work.

512GB of storage. Design files and video footage are big. Plan on an external drive for archives either way.

Colour. Most business laptop screens are not made for colour-critical print work. If colour accuracy matters, pair the laptop with a calibrated external monitor.
