Buying guide
Best laptops for students in Kenya (2026)
What a student laptop really needs, which refurbished models fit a student budget, and how to avoid buying one that stops getting security updates.
Short answer: most students are best served by a light 13-inch business laptop with an 8th Gen Intel chip or newer and 8GB of RAM, such as the Dell Latitude 5300 or the HP EliteBook 830 G6. Both run Windows 11 and are built to survive a school bag.
A student laptop gets carried every day, used for hours on battery, and has to last the whole course. Business laptops are built for exactly that, which is why a Grade A refurbished one is usually a better buy than a new budget laptop at the same price.
What a student laptop needs
Light enough to carry. A 12.5 to 13.3-inch screen keeps the laptop small and light. Go 14-inch only if you'll mostly use it at a desk.
Windows 11 support. Windows 10 stopped getting security updates in October 2025. An 8th Gen Intel chip or newer runs Windows 11 and keeps getting updates through your course. Every listing shows a "Windows 11" tag.
8GB of RAM. That handles Office, research, online classes and plenty of browser tabs. Studying programming, engineering or design? Read the programming or design guide instead.
A healthy battery. Battery wear varies from unit to unit, so ask us for the battery report of the exact laptop before you pay.

FAQ
How much RAM does a student need?
8GB is enough for Office, research and online classes. Choose 16GB if your course uses heavy software such as programming tools, CAD or video editing.
Is a Windows 10 laptop OK for school?
It works, but Windows 10 no longer gets security updates. If the laptop will be online every day, choose one marked Windows 11 ready.
Should a student buy a MacBook?
Only if your course or work needs macOS. Windows business laptops cost less for the same performance, and most university software runs on Windows.
