The best refurbished laptops in Kenya by budget (2026)
Which Grade A refurbished laptop to buy at every budget, how to decode EliteBook, ThinkPad and Latitude model names, and what to check before you pay.
Short answer: on a tight budget get the Dell Latitude 5300, in the middle the ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 or EliteBook 840 G6, and if you need graphics power the ZBook Firefly 14 G8. Each one runs Windows 11 and is sold Grade A only.
Refurbished business laptops spent their first years in offices, then were inspected and restored. They were built for daily office use, so a good one outlasts a new budget laptop at the same price. The catch is that every listing looks the same: "HP 840 G6 i5 8/256". This guide decodes the names and picks the best value at each budget. For full price ranges per model, see the series pages: EliteBook, ThinkPad, Latitude and MacBook Pro.
First, decode the model name
HP. EliteBook is HP's business line. The 830 is 13.3-inch and the 840 is 14-inch. A model ending in 5 (745, 845) is the AMD Ryzen version. ProBook is HP's mid-range line, and ZBook is the workstation line with dedicated graphics. The "G" number is the generation: G5 and G6 have 8th Gen Intel chips, G7 has 10th Gen and G8 has 11th Gen.
Lenovo. Everything here is a ThinkPad. X models are small and light, T models are the mainstream 14-inch line, and X1 is the premium flagship. "Yoga" in the name means it flips over into a tablet.
Dell. Latitude is Dell's business line: 5000 series for mainstream, 7000 series for premium. The second digit is roughly the screen size, so the 5300 is 13-inch, the 5400 is 14-inch and the 7280 is 12-inch.
Two rules for buying in 2026
Get 8th Gen Intel or newer if you'll run Windows. Windows 10 stopped getting free security updates in October 2025, and Windows 11 officially needs an 8th Gen Intel chip or newer. Older laptops still work, but they stay on an unsupported Windows. Every listing on Dobatron has a "Windows 11" tag so you don't have to work it out.
8GB of RAM is the minimum, 16GB if you multitask. 8GB handles Office, browsing and Zoom. Go for 16GB if you keep dozens of tabs open, edit photos, or run several apps at once.
Under KSh 25,000: students and first laptops
The Dell Latitude 5300 is the pick here, because it's one of the few laptops at this price with an 8th Gen chip, so it runs Windows 11. It's 13.3-inch and light enough to carry all day.
The ThinkPad X270 is smaller and famously tough, but its older chip means Windows 10. That's fine for typing, browsing and online classes, as long as you know the trade-off.
KSh 25,000 to 35,000: the sweet spot for work
This is where most buyers should look. The Dell Latitude 5400 gives you a 14-inch touchscreen and an 8th Gen chip. The ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 is the standout: a 10th Gen chip and 16GB of RAM, which is rare at this budget. If you prefer HP, the EliteBook 830 G6 is the compact choice.
KSh 35,000 to 45,000: EliteBook 840 territory
The EliteBook 840 is the laptop most people picture when they think of a refurbished business laptop. Here are three generations with the same i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and touchscreen, so the only difference is the processor generation:
For everyday work, the G6 is the value pick. The jump from the G6's 8th Gen chip to the G7's 10th Gen is small. The G8's 11th Gen chip is a bigger step, with noticeably better built-in graphics, so it's worth the extra if you want the newest model.
If you want more memory for the same money, look at the ThinkPad T490s: an i7, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage with a touchscreen.
KSh 45,000 and up: power users and macOS
The EliteBook 830 G7 with an i7 and 16GB is a compact machine for heavy multitaskers. The ZBook Firefly 14 G8 is a workstation: 32GB of RAM and dedicated graphics for CAD, design and video editing. If you need macOS, the 2018 MacBook Pro with 16GB is the one to get. Older Intel MacBooks don't get the newest macOS releases, so check which version the unit runs before you pay.
Want a tablet as well?
Convertibles fold back into a tablet for notes, signing documents and presenting. The ThinkPad X390 Yoga comes with a stylus pen.
What to check before you pay
Whoever you buy from, check these on the actual unit:
- Battery health. On Windows, open Command Prompt, run
powercfg /batteryreportand open the file it creates. Compare "Full charge capacity" with "Design capacity". Above 80% is good. - No company lock. Restart and open the BIOS setup: it shouldn't ask for a password. In Windows Settings, you shouldn't see "Some settings are managed by your organization".
- Keyboard and trackpad. Open Notepad and press every key.
- Screen. View a plain white image and a plain black one to spot dead pixels or pressure marks.
- Ports and charger. Test every USB port, the charging port and HDMI if you need it. Make sure the charger is the right wattage.
- Wi-Fi, webcam, mic and speakers. One quick video call tests all four.

FAQ
Is a refurbished laptop as good as a new one?
A Grade A business laptop is built to a higher standard than most new budget laptops, so it often lasts longer. What matters is the condition of the exact unit, which is why we only sell Grade A and confirm each unit with you before you pay.
Which budget gets the best value?
The middle band, where a 10th Gen ThinkPad X13 with 16GB or an 8th Gen EliteBook 840 G6 costs far less than a comparable new laptop. See the ThinkPad and EliteBook pages for current price ranges.
