Best laptops for programming in Kenya (2026)

How much RAM, which processor and what screen a programmer needs, and the refurbished laptops that fit, from learning to code to running heavy tools.

By Dobatron · Updated · Prices and stock checked

Short answer: get 16GB of RAM, an SSD and an 8th Gen chip or newer. The Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 (10th Gen, 16GB) is the value pick; the ThinkPad T490s or an i7 EliteBook 830 G7 suit heavier tools.

Code itself is light. What slows a programmer down is everything around it: an editor, a browser full of documentation, a local server, maybe an emulator or Docker, all open at once. That's a memory problem first and a processor problem second.

What matters, in order

RAM: 16GB if you can. 8GB is fine for learning and web development. Android emulators, Docker, databases and data work are far more comfortable with 16GB.

Processor: 8th Gen Intel or AMD Ryzen and newer. An i5 compiles and runs most projects well. An i7 or Ryzen 7 helps with big builds, but RAM makes the bigger difference.

Storage: an SSD, 256GB minimum. An SSD makes everything feel faster; we confirm the drive type of the exact unit on WhatsApp. Choose 512GB if you keep many projects, virtual machines or datasets.

Keyboard and screen. You will type all day: ThinkPad and EliteBook keyboards are among the best on any laptop. A 13 to 14-inch screen plus an external monitor at your desk is the most comfortable setup.

Mac or Windows? You need a Mac only to build iPhone and Mac apps. For web, Android, data and most other work, Windows (or Linux) does the job for less.

Laptops that suit programmers right now

These models have 16GB of RAM or a strong processor, cheapest first. The list updates as stock changes.

Building iPhone apps?

You'll need macOS. These are the MacBook Pros we can source right now.

FAQ

Is 8GB of RAM enough for programming?

For learning and web development, yes. For Android development, Docker, virtual machines or data work, 16GB makes a real difference.

Is a refurbished laptop good enough for software development?

Yes. A business laptop from the last few generations, with 16GB of RAM and an SSD, handles everyday development comfortably. Check the processor generation and RAM rather than the age of the model.
